Staying at The Club Seabourne Hotel on Culebra Island, Puerto Rico

USA

The Club Seabourne Hotel on Culebra Island is your perfect boutique outpost to get away from it all.

Don’t come to Culebra if you expect to do much. The island welcomes a healthy laziness, and those that wish to dwell and remain very under the radar fare well here. Culebra isn’t a Caribbean island like some of the others where the allure of rum runners and the bright, bold colors dominate the environment. I particularly despise all that and think it cheapens what an authentic island represents.

Made for those seeking the ultimate escape plan.

Culebra, on the other hand, is free. It boasts the famous Flamenco Beach, rated in 2017 as a Top 25 beach in the world by Tripadvisor.  It remains sleepy, and after hurricanes Maria and Irma is even a little more sleepy than before.  But it’s all good, and even more charming. At The Club Seabourne Hotel, despite the capacity of approximately 13 rooms on the main property and the Sea Villas (where I stayed), you feel like you are the only one there. The hotel is yours, hammocks in palm trees, pool, and all. Those that come to this island embrace the ‘speed’; Culebra is where you’d go to shack up and write a novel.

The Hotel

The main property is home to a lovely pool that overlooks the water. The Club Seabourne is the region’s only boutique hotel designed for you to truly get away from it all and immerse yourself in a unique experience that can only be described as a quaint and chic Caribbean environment. The hotel also offers Sea Villas down the road from the main property that are on the water, fully equipped with a large kitchen. I would recommend staying in one of these upscale apartment types of spaces if you plan to explore the island more than a few days. Overall, The Club Seabourne is an intimate mini-resort, and you come here to do one thing: relax.

The Rooms

Chic and quaint, the spaces are ideal for an afternoon nap or sleeping in.

The Food & Drink

They hotel only serves breakfast, and the bar opens at 4pm, but don’t expect to fight for an order or lively crowd. Chances are, you’ll be the best (maybe only) customer, but it is fantastic. It is your escape, your paradise, your island.  I treated myself to a couple painkillers for good measure (which were delicious), and a nostalgic gesture to my time spent in the Virgin Islands exactly a year ago. There’s just something about sipping wine on a Caribbean island I just can’t seem to wrap my head around.

The Ambiance

As you enjoy the view of the lush greenery that surrounds you as you stare out through the palm trees towards the (essentially) private beach, you can’t help to feel as though you’ve arrived. My only complaint is that there are a fair amount of mosquitoes to strike for; but nothing that’s not remedied without a bit of repellent and mindfulness of closing doors. And this is all very typical when you are visiting any island – the mosquitos just come around based on the direction of the winds.
