Staying at the Dreamcatcher Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico

USA

Yoga-lovers, surfers and vegans, here’s what you need to know about staying at the Dreamcatcher Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Dreamcatcher Hotel situated in the Ocean Park district of San Juan, Puerto Rico was one of my favorite discoveries from my trip. It is the only vegetarian hotel in San Juan, and offers an incredible welcome to the destination in what I like to call, the Venice beach of San Juan. This haven of chill offers daily yoga classes at 8am, vegan breakfast, endless nooks with hammocks for you to curl up in, and an uber chill jungle vibe.

The Hotel

The Dreamcatcher is the vision of Sylvia DeMarco. Her heartfelt creation is more like a home, decorated with vintage trinkets and all sorts of surprises. It is an incredibly accommodating venue with great energy, sitting in a gated community (as is most of the Ocean Park area) whereby no cars can freely enter keeping the neighborhood peaceful and safe. Ocean Park is only a 10 minute walk from Condado, a touristic area packed with even more restaurants, spas and shops. The Historical Old San Juan is a 10 minute car ride and so is the airport. I loved staying away from the busier areas but having them accessible.

Activities

Guests may sign up for yoga and meditation classes ($12 suggested donation), take part in sightseeing tours, do paddle boarding, or opt for nature-adventure tours outside of the typical touristy options. The full list of activities includes: Bike Tours, Salsa Classes, Paddle Boarding, Yoga under the Stars, Hiking in the Rainforest, Morning Yoga, Waterfall Tours, Tarot Readings and Cave Tours. Not far away is the popular Loíza Street, full of boutiques and cafes that you can explore by foot or by renting a bike.  Oh, and how could I forget, in-room massages are also available.

The Rooms

All rooms have A/C, cotton sheets, bath and beach towels, a hairdryer and an iron. There are both suites and shared space rooms, so best to explore your preference before you book as there are a range of options priced accordingly. There are no TVs, which I love, but free Wi-Fi so you can post up and get stuff done in the lovely garden as you sip an almond milk latte. Every room is decorated with a Dreamcatcher, to protect your sleep and entice sweet dreams. The hotel also offers laundry service.

In the event that the Dreamcatcher is booked, I suggest you explore Sylvia’s apartments available on Airbnb. I was thrilled to randomly discover this secondary haven of hers and stay there as well.

Vintage and eco-chic

Food & Drink

The Dreamcatcher sources almost all of their food locally. They use organic produce and offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Post yoga one day I asked for a water, but was presented with a gorgeous hibiscus tea instead which I gladly slurped down. They also have lovely juice blends, homemade hemp milk and kombucha elixirs made with all natural ingredients. I also purchased some chocolate cookies from the kitchen that were insanely delicious.
