If you are confused about accommodation and where to stay in Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria and Irma – I’ve got you covered. Looking for accommodation in Puerto Rico is especially challenging after the hurricanes swept through – and I’m quite picky as it is, so I found it difficult to book a place with confidence at first. The more I searched for accommodations, I found that many hotels were still closed, or under repair. I spent a month exploring the island and its’ surrounding brother-sister islands, so in order to save you time searching, here are my suggestions for where to stay in Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria and Irma!

Most of these hotels are “green”, built sustainably keeping nature in mind, offer wifi, yoga, vegan options for on-premise dining, and each definitely offers a unique flair that is bespoke and absolutely fabulous. The Dreamcatcher Hotel, San Juan
The Dreamcatcher Hotel is situated in the Ocean Park district of San Juan. This was my favorite neighboorhood, full of artificial boutiques, cute cafes, and a Venice Beach vibe. It is the only ‘vegan’ hotel in San Juan, and offers daily yoga classes at 8am, vegan breakfast, endless nooks with hammocks for you to curl up in, and an uber chill jungle vibe.
What you can expect:
- Yoga classes
- In-room massage treatments
- A killer map to welcome you to the area
- A beautiful vegan breakfast
- Cute boutique with locally made crafts and souvenirs
The Club Seabourne, Culebra Island
The Club Seabourne is Culebra Island’s only boutique hotel designed for you to truly get away from it all and immerse yourself in a unique experience that can only be described as a quaint and chic Caribbean environment. The hotel also offers Sea Villas down the road from the main property that are on the water, fully equipped with a large kitchen. These are your best bet if you are a small family or plan to stay a while.
What you can expect:
- Breakfast in the sunroom area. NB: no lunch or dinner is served here
- Caparina bar next to the pool (this does not get busy)
- Classic beach-chic design
- Tranquility, calm, and quiet

The Gallery Inn, Old San Juan
This is one of the most utterly charming hotels I have ever stayed at. The owner Jan moved to San Juan in 1961 on a mission to restore a home. Spread through six adjoining buildings, over time Jan had inadvertently created this historic gem that goes back to the mid seventeen hundreds! Every corner here has a story – every room its special flavor, spanning from five decades of D’Esopo/Gandia style. It’s full of antiques, relics, and many stories. Also, there are several parrots that are incredible and hang out all over the property, and a KILLER piano bar.
What you can expect:
- A magical in-house piano bar called the Cannon Club
- Gorgeous real-life parrots that surprise you at every corner
- Beautiful antique decor everywhere
- A historic building with an “if these walls could talk!” kinda vibe

Hotel Il Convento
Located in the heart of Old San Juan, this hotel is housed in an incredibly beautiful building. I dined in the courtyard one evening and it was lovely; birds chirping into the evening, little cute cats wandering about, wonderful plants and architecture to marvel at, and the food was great! I did not stay here on my last trip, but I highly suggest it. The rooms are super unique, and you can’t beat the location.
What you can expect:
- 3 restaurants onsite
- Ideal location smack in the center of Old San Juan
- Distinct Puerto Rican vintage vibe
- Excellent service
Hix Island House, Vieques Island
Sitting pretty on Vieques Island you will find this incredible haven that is built in the Japanese wabi-sabi style. The Hix design is made to fit in nature – the design considers the forces of nature and how those natural elements will affect his buildings and designs. The designer uses rocks to harmonize with the countryside, leveraging the advantages of how the sun, topography, rain, breeze, and climate all relate and reinforce one another to create a space that is beautiful and organic.
What you can expect:
- Yoga pavilion
- Lucious in-ground pool
- In-room cooking spaces with supplies for breakfast
- An environment of total zen and relaxation
- Wild horses
Villa Montana
We stopped at the gorgeous seaside boutique-like resort en route to Rincon. Only about 30 minutes from the epic surf town, the Villa Montana offered a beach-chic and spacious room – almost like a mini condo. And, a FANTASTIC al fresco restaurant on the beach. They had an incredible menu, cocktails, and wine list. It felt like it could have been Ibiza – I was very impressed by the attention to detail. Even though this haven was perched on the beach (which felt private), there were two large pools you could choose from to chill out at. I highly recommend stopping by here at the least to have a look around and an aperitif, or breakfast where you can get your waffles or pancakes complemented by chia seeds and nut butters. Fancy!
